Retribution Falls by Chris Wooding

Well, if you liked Firefly/Serenity, you'll love this. At least I did, it was fun and exciting and I LOVED the characters :D Plus the book has nice cover art ;) Can't wait to get my hands on the sequel.

@Snow: I don't know what it is with this book, but I found "On the Road" incredibly boring to read. Didn't work for me at all. I can appreciat the style of writing, but the story had nothing in it for me and I hugely disliked the characters. *shrugs*

Last book I read:

Robbie Williams - you know me. Yep, another biography of sorts or rather a clollection of pictures and Rob's thoughts about them. I enjoyed it.

I began reading The Earthsea Cycle.... It seems pretty epic...... I was inspired by the Studio Ghibli film so that's where this sudden interest rose... 8)

I finished Jonathan Carroll's The Wooden Sea last week, and this week I read Alexandra Salmela's 27 eli kuolema tekee taiteilijan ("27, death makes an artist").

The Wooden Sea did make me want to read more of Carroll's work, even though his way of writing and choice of words seemed very strange (strange as in unfamiliar) at the beginning.

27 was... Well, it was interesting. The writer is a Czech who lives in Finland and who has studied the Finnish language at an university, so she wrote the book originally in Finnish. The book somehow had the same feeling as Kari Hotakainen and some other Finnish writers' work, where everything just goes from bad to worse as the main characters keep on becoming crazier. It was also interesting how there were four narrators, who all had an unique way of seeing things: The family car was completely objective, only reporting what people said and did, the cat looked down upon everybody, the pig-plushie saw everything in a positive light and the main character, a fledgling writer Angie, was most of all concerned about herself.
The depiction of Angie's drama queen ways and switching between self-loathing and overconfidence and the family's mother's attempts of being a perfect wife, mother and human being by stressing soft values, eco-friendliness and "living outside of the system" hit me quite hard. Reading the book made me stop and think quite often, especially since it made me remember how ridiculous I have been and am myself.
I don't know if it will ever be translated into English, but I'm quite sure that it will become a Finnish modern classic.

What did you think of the ending? Glad you liked Carroll.

27 sounds interesting. Too bad I know so little Finnish.

I'm about 30 pages from finishing The Gunslinger by Stephen King. I'm not in love with it, but it's been entertaining enough.

Yep, that was one of the motives as well because usually books are better (IMO)..... And if you watch the movie before the book you'll get the thrill twice.... But many times watching the movie after the book ends in disappointment, like "why did they leave so many parts unincluded?" etc.... And btw, I enjoy the slowness, it calms you down and makes you see the delicate details... To me, slow is epic and vice versa........ :)

Both books from the same serie. Nice, sometimes funny, something for cold evenings ^^

Dan Brown - "Angels And Demons"

Finally I had the time to take it in my hands.
Whoa, really great book. Keep in suspence, surprising twists. I loved how Brown wrote about emotions and feelings in various situations, I felt like I was right there. I think it was one of the best books I have ever read.
Much better than the movie as for me.

@redbossfan: I thought the ending was original, to say the least. Like, "Sir, you have to endure plenties of hardships to save the world." After the hardships: "Sir, everything you've been through has been pointless. Our condolences." I wasn't too happy about the author bringing God into the plot, but what I did like was the fact that the main character of the book wasn't the main character of his world in the end.

Not every book is for everyone, of course :wink:

I like it cause it's simple, and the characters are some I have met in my past. They aren't all great, but all people have places in life, whether they be good or bad or not so great. Life balance I guess is what I understand from the story. Maybe that doesn't make sense to anyone but me.

Does Glamour mag count? :D Yeah, read the whole thing cover to cover last night :roll:

Just finished a five-part series from Justina Robson, called Quantum Gravity. It's a fantasy/scifi adventure with humor, exitement, magic, technology and some more serious themes about identity, family ties and self-doubt.

Characters include part human, part cyborg heroine, an elf rockstar, fairies, demons, ghosts and dead people. I highly recommend it for those who like that sort of stuff :)
