This is the thread where fans can rate and appreciate every aspect of POTF: from studio songs to music videos.

Invariably, ratings reveal more about the user's preferences than about the band's talents. Please keep in mind that all ratings or reviews are purely opinion. In my opinion, Poets of the Fall is a contemporary music artist that has no equal. The song lyrics are, almost without exception, subtly elegant and evocative of vivid symbolic imagery; the vocalist's voice is always resonant and poignantly emotional; and the underlining music itself is variable and expressive. In short, Poets of the Fall is an unexpected delight that never ceases to awe and amaze.

So it is with honesty and humility that I offer my opinion. After all, everyone's a critic (unfortunately).

The following is my complete list, accompanied with a rating (out of ten). Album ratings, it should be noted, are highly deflated in comparison to contemporary music; to account for this deflation, there is a key below that translates the numbers into a typical grading system (A, B, C, D, F).

7.8-10 = A
6.8-7.7 = B
5.8-6.7 = C

(I doubt Poets of the Fall will ever score lower than a C.)

For reference:
Simon & Garfunkel - Sounds of Silence - 10
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody - 8
Lady Gaga - Bad Romance - 6

Signs of Life - 7.2 - B

An artist's debut. A good start, with deeply personal music and lyrics. While most of the songs are unimpressive, there are some real masterpieces among them (Lift, Late Goodbye, Illusion & Dream, and Sleep) and vast potential for the future.

Carnival of Rust - 7.9 - A-

An artist comes of age. This is an excellent album, and a vast improvement on their previous one. The band has much more confidence and the lyrics are deeply poetic and masterfully subtle. There are still a few weak songs (Gravity, King of Fools), but most songs are truly works of genius (Sorry Go 'Round, Carnival of Rust, Locking Up the Sun, and Delicious among others). (The extra music video for Carnival of Rust is a special treat and a rare delight.)

Revolution Roulette - 6.6 - C+

An artist experiments. While I do appreciate the band's experimentation and inventiveness, I think it's fair to say that this album doesn't quite live up to its predecessors. After about the fourth song, it gets a little tiresome and doesn't pick up again until the final numbers. I also found the unsung vocals distracting (e.g., "Hello. Anybody home? I'm coming in!"), not to mention the occasional improper enunciation (especially with the letter H as in "hallucination"). Nevertheless, there are at least a few rare gems that shine through the gloom, such as Passion Colors Everything and Where Do We Draw the Line? - although the latter hardly seems to fit on the album. (More, in particular, is sadly underrated.)

Twilight Theater - 8.7 - A+

An artist achieves alchemy. This album leaves me almost speechless, and breathless as well. It's damn close to perfection, in my opinion, and it wouldn't be an overstatement to say that this is the best music album—of any band—I've ever heard. With the singular exception of Dreaming Wide Awake, every song brims with confidence and masterful subtlety. Truly a magnum opus and worthy of the band. My personal favorites are War, Given and Denied, You're Still Here, and Smoke and Mirrors.

Alchemy, Vol. 1 - 8.4 - A

Self-portrait of an artist. A solid collection of the artist's best songs, though somewhat disappointing. It doesn't include some of their best songs (The Beautiful Ones, which is tragically not included in any album, Smoke and Mirrors, and Where Do We Draw the Line?), while it contains one or two songs which are questionable (Stay, Dreaming Wide Awake). However, the last song more than makes up for any inadequacies in song choice: No End, No Beginning deserves its place as one of the band's best pieces. Conceptually, the theme of alchemy and the imagery of the uroboros are aptly ingenious and remarkably brilliant.

Temple of Thought - 7.3 B

Great expectations lead to disappointment. This is a very good album but ultimately not the band's best. Notably, it lacks any level 10 songs (although The Lie Eternal comes close) and there are too many simple love songs. The music itself, including the vocals, are superb--but the lyrics in some cases aren't as poignant or subtle as is typical of the band. Aside from a few peculiar pronunciations, there are even some lyrics which verge on adolescent (e.g., "I ain't trying to write you into a song, 'cause you're too sacred and I would feel wrong."). Finally, there is no grand finale or climactic crescendo that was such a memorable part of the other albums; The Ballad of Jeremiah Peacekeeper, though a beautiful song (even if unlike the band's unique style), doesn't carry enough force, and The Happy Song seems tacked on (I think it would be more fitting at the end of Revolution Roulette, rather than Temple of Thought). Overall though, it's another great album and, as always, far more impressive than most of what passes for music these days.

01. Where Do We Draw the Line? - 10

how long did you took to do that? :D

ALBUMS:

SoL
TT
RR
CoR

But in each album there's at least 5-6 songs I can't live without.

I can't do the same with the single songs, i love them too much to make a complete classification. In twilight theatre for example I'd say that all the songs are perfect except Dreaming wide awake and Rewind which are "just" very good songs. This is the best I can do. I'd definitely bring all POTF discography if I had to move on a desert island :D

Surprisingly not long at all. I kind of naturally order songs when I listen to them.

As would I... though I'd probably also need a CD player, or else that would merely be torture. And I agree with you about TT. I thought that album was the strongest I've ever heard; every song stood out as particularly amazing (except DWA, which was "just" a very good song).

Thanks for the post.

Songs

[Here I did something bit different- It goes like this- If I had to have only one album, which 12 songs out of all 4 albums would in include]
----------------------------------
3 AM
The Ultimate Fling
Revolution Roulette
Fragile
Clevermind
Passion Colors Everything
Save Me
Where Do We Draw the Line
King of Fools
All the Way / 4U
Dawn
Illusion & Dream
-------------------------------------

As you can see I don’t have any song from TT on my list. But not because I least liked the album but because all other songs are attached to memories I have. Each song takes me to different moments. I didn’t have a chance to do that with TT songs, so they are less important for now. That's why it’s easier to give up on them.
I'm sure, by time, my list will have dramatic changes. =)

You do know that you can fit 17-18 songs on a CD. Why settle for 12?

There are no songs I don't like. There're only songs that today I love more than the other day... But I never love some song less than the others, not a single day.

Instead, I'll post from most to least favorite emotions just to screw with you guys:

I think what you did has a lot of merit, you're giving a little review on why you rated a song high or low. That's very good, and I agree with you on many things. But... I couldn't do that, myself. :P

One of the things I love the most about POTF is the simple, yet important fact that their style is everything but monotonous, so mostly every day I have a different favourite song. It all depends on my mood, and whatever I'm facing on that day. Although, I could mention my 'most played' POTF list. Here it goes:

Roses. I listen to that song quite often, one of my favourite POTF verses is in that song. 'I bought a book of rules for every coin that I could steal'. That's pure genious.

Fire. The energy and overall 'feel' of that song just calls me. I think it's a masterpiece.

Dawn. It's one of my all time favourite ballads. It's a very simple song, but I think it brings out most of the potential in Marko's voice. I love listening to Dawn on my iPod, the earphones enhance the experience. :P

Illusion and Dream. The lyrics are wonderful, I love when it breaks into trhe chorus. The sound of the guitar along with the voice is stunning.

Revolution Roulette. This song is underrared, in my opinion. I love how the song progresses, I really like the slightly agressive feel it has and how it goes perfectly with the lyrics.

Where do we draw the line. Whatever I say about this song wouldn't be enough to describe it. It's just poetry in it's finest along with a haunting soft music. A masterpiece.

Again, I don't think the songs I mentioned above are better than the rest. I just choose what I want to listen according to how I'm feeling or what I'm living.

I didn't mention any of TT's songs, I know. I'm still playing the whole album on repeat.

@Tzofi!

First off, thank you. I could, of course, have gone in much more detail with any song in particular, but I thought that would just be too cumbersome (not to mention time-consuming, on my part).

The songs you specifically mention, even if you don't like them more than the rest, I find particularly interesting - all of which I also think are incredibly good songs.

Roses - I do agree with you here. My personal favorite verse is "And so I came to gaze upon the stars, when they were yet unborn, and consequently tear at my old scars, and the mask I had outworn." But all the lyrics are so masterfully written (except that brief segment at the end I mentioned earlier).

Revolution Roulette - You're probably right here. I think I might have underrated this song in particular. I'll have to give it another listen. It was indeed one of the better songs (in my opinion) from the album.

And there really isn't much more to say on the other songs you singled out, because I absolutely agree.

Oh, and on a more personal note, what is "And then, there was silence" from? It sounds like something POTF would say.

I'm glad we agree. :P And yes, you should give Revolution Roulette another chance.

I must confess I didn't quite love it when I first heard it, I thought there was something strange(?) about that song. But it really grew on me, I payed attention to the lyrics and suddenly realized it was a great song! Go figure. That happens to me quite often.

And about my signature. It's just a phrase that popped in my head one day. I was once writing a story, loosely based on reality... And I finished it with that phrase. I really don't know where it came from, I just thought it fit.

There aren't many songs that I could live without. The first one I fell in love with was "Lift" so that will forever be one of my favorites. Locking Up the Sun is pretty awesome...the other ones I would say stand out the most to me are Late Goodbye, Roses, Stay, All the Way, Illusion and Dream, Overboard, Everything Fades, Shallow, Revolution Roulette, Carnival of Rust, Gravity, Clevermind, Psychosis, Fire, and Maybe Tomorrow is a Better Day. (I realize I'm missing several more songs that could be on this list, but not all of their songs are on playlist.com and I don't have the CDs)

Forgive me, I know this is getting off-topic, but I swear I ended a poem with something almost exactly the same. It's a fitting ending, if I do say so myself (which I do).

I suppose great minds think alike. :P

Seriously now, I'll try to find that story I'm telling you about. I believe there's a topic here for literature and poetry. You could post your poem there, if you want to share it with us.

Amd about that... Poor guy probably can't. :( Sadly, their albums are not available everywhere, as you might know. :( I've had to order Twilight Theater and Carnival of Rust online; Signs of Life and Revolution Roulette, I got on two different trips to Finland.

I'd love to read it - honestly. I'd also love to share my poem, but first I need to find the time for some heavy revisions so that it more accurately reflects how I think now. I'll remember to keep you posted.

I do know; in fact, I can't buy the album where I live (US). I usually just order them online - or have someone else order them for me. I still have yet to receive Twilight Theater. And iTunes simply will not do. It's a shame that this band still hasn't found the recognition it deserves. I only hope that they'll make the album available on Amazon.com soon (though I think my copy has already been ordered).

I hope there's a US tour this time. We've been left out of the mix for far too long (which is understandable, what with the cost of air travel and the dispersement of a viable fan base).

Well, you, as a resident from the US have a little more hope than I do. I've seen them twice, but just because I moved my butt to Finland. Let's face it, I'll probably see a frog grow a mane before I see Poets of the Fall getting off a plane where I live. (Venezuela).

Hey hey POTF fans.
Just out of curiosity I was wondering what are your favourite songs from POTF? And why? Do the songs have a personal meaning to you? Or do you just like the way it sounds?
For example, my favourite song is 'Dying to Live' because I simply love the guitar and keyboard in it and also because I find the lyrics are ambiguous so you can apply them to yourself in a way :D
Also which is better in your opinion? Music or lyrics?
Can't wait to hear your opinions!

Howdy! We already have a bazillion topics like this, not far away from this one, if you look closely. There you will find tons of comments and thoughts about what's everybody's POTF darling. :)

Mine. Yellow Submarine.

My personal favourites

Lift - It was the first song I heard that had me hooked to this band. For some reason it reminds me of superheroes
Dreaming Wide Awake - I love the melody of this song, I listened to this one at least 5 times today
Carnival of Rust - I love the theme behind this one and I love the video, it's very Tim Burtonesque and arty. I love arty music videos :D

"Where Do We Draw The Line"
why? i don't know, when i hear it, my whole life scrolls before me like before dying, but i'm not dying when the song ends and i'm happy that i'm alive.

to Sascha - if you're the mod here and have power, why not just merge the existing topics without whining that a newbie started another one ;)

Well my good kidding mood has been killed for today. Sucks. I hate being mad, but I will change that.

So today:

Fire

I love Lift - I agree that it reminds me of superheroes for some reason, it's just a larger than life song.

Most of the Twilight Theater album - It sounds like it's from the 70's, except for Dreaming Wide Awake and Dying to Live

Late Goodbye - First one I heard. Love it.
