A song called He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother, its an old song and I think the band's called the Hollies. It has some sad significance for me.

Hmmm, sad songs... it mostly depends on my own mood how I actually perceive a song's emotion. And there's quite a few songs in my playlist that qualify as 'sad', imho... let's see...

Poets of the Fall - All The Way/4U, Sleep, Where Do We Draw The Line

Saybia - The Second You Sleep, The Day After Tomorrow

Marie Digby/Scott Simons - Umbrella (Rihanna's version sucks, imho)

Hooverphonic - Eden (I saw someone mention Sarah Brightman's version... I like this one better)

Archive - Again

Massive Attack - Teardrop

Jose Gonzales - Heartbeats

Evanescence - My Immortal

Hoobastank - The Reason

Roxette - Listen To Your Heart

VNV Nation - Beloved

The Fray - How To Save A Life

Lacrimas Profundere - Come Solitude

Sonata Arctica - Tallulah, Shy, Gravenimage

Diorama - Leaving Hollywood, Das Meer

Secondhand Serenade - Your Call, It's Not Over

ASP - Und Wir Tanzen (Ungeschickte Liebesbriefe), Nie Mehr

Zeraphine - Sterne Sehen, Halbes Ende

Unheilig - Mein Stern

I'm sure there are a lot more, but I think these are enough for now.

Machinae Supremacy - Violator

Actually it's more angry, but it is also very sad in a sense.
It's a song about religion, how trementous power can it have over people, how evil it can become when misused and how sadly easy it is to do so.
Besides, it doesn't have that cliché "You're so, so bad and evil, but we will stand up and defeat you because evil never prevails" kind of attitude. It 's more like "You're evil. Evil does prevail." Sadly true.

And the hateful and fearing will come to your aid...

There are many many wonderful sad songs...I begin,of course, with Poets of the Fall, who seems to have a keen on wonderful sad songs.Late Goodbye,Dawn,Sleep,Someone Special,Where do we draw the line,Carnival of Rust,Illusion and dream and we can continue..Marko is a very sensible person.
Then Within Temptation have also many wonderful sad songs...Memories is my favourite.
Then Evanescence...My immortal,Lithium etc.
I've just discovered a very very sad song called Sad Violin and which is composed by a Vietnamese. It is really wonderful, trust me  Here's the link:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSnR80kY0m0
Oh,and another sad song is Comptine d'une autre ete by Yann Tiersen, song from the Amelie movie,as well as La valse d'Amelie.
And there are many, many songs untold yet...I think that music is the best barometer for our feelings...

sad songs...
These days I'm really listening to a lot of sad songs, because I'm overlistening to Sonata Arctica (I don't think that verb overlistening exists... but anyway :P ), and they got some real killer-song: Shy, Tallulah, Last Drop Falls, The Misery, My Selene, Paid In Full... (could go on). And they're so beautiful I can't stop listening to them

among POTF songs, I'd say The Beautiful Ones.

Johnossi - 18 karat cold definitely!! at least on this moment.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4yVAyLnHwc

The lyrics are beautifully sad, too. The chorus especially, so here they are ;)

18 karat gold wouldn't fill the hole
The bleeding hole in her heart, that's made from cicumstances at home
Because they kept pulling her hair, and so it choked her words
She don't sleep at night, afraid to turn out the light
And she's home

I thought 18 karat gold would save a lonely soul
But she don't sleep at night, afraid to turn out the light
Cause they kept pulling her hair, wouldn't leave her alone
But if only I could read her mind and release that stone

In her heart where the sadness grows
I'd operate with this knife
And cut a big fat giant hole
to fill with gold and light

But there's an endless battle to be won
And me I ain't a man with an educated mind
And soon, you won't have the strength to carry on
So you scream about it in the night.....

My 18 karat gold, it fills a dirty hole
A dirty bleeding hole in my heart, you people think it's made from circumstances at home
Well if someone ever should be pulling your hair, then I guess you should leave them alone
And now you want me to read your mind and release that stone

That stone in your heart where the sadness grows.
You know I, I'd operate with this knife
And cut a big fat giant hole, to fill with gold and light

But there's an endless battle to be won
And me I ain't a man with an educated mind
And soon, you won't have the strength to carry on
And so you scream about it in the night

Dope Stars Inc. - Can you imagine?
Edguy - Save me

Definitely the best one, I agree. And far better than NIN's version.
