So, is there a trace of Poets in the movie?

Looking t the trailer of Max Payne, the music reminded me of a "Death Race" theme with Jason Staham starring =(

It's probably on german bittorrent sites....

Seriously people, don't pay for this thing. The only thing that's gonna make people stop making crappy video game movies is people not paying for them.

Well, the movie debuted first at the box office in US, so I think it's actually possible we will be seeing Max Payne 2. Plus, it has yet to debut in some countries.

We don't really have the spoiler tag here at forums, but... trying not to spoil it, it seems that this film is really loosely based on the games and I think it may be the worst thing about this. Why did they change so much? The game has a really amazing script, but they decided to just change it... I have no idea why. It's like they would do a HP movie changing most of the things that happened in the book.

Here in Kansas City, Missouri, our local movie reviewers for one of the new channels gave Max Payne the worst rating ever. However, at 8:36 pm Sunday nite, within only 3 days at the theatre, Max Payne movie has grossed over $18 million nationwide.

Sometimes critics aren't always correct, so tomorrow nite, Im going to see it for myself.

I have a different opinion on this. I think it would have sucked. :D

The critics bashed the movie pretty badly but critics pretty much suck anyways especially one critic whose words were "I don't trust a film in which the main characters have a conversation or argument under the pouring rain without umbrella's." Reliable stuff.

The movie is loosely based on the game but it does a good job of capturing the style and emotions the game had. It felt like a different version of Max Payne. I liked the movie and feel it was pretty well done and better than majority of the crap video games coming out Resident Evil and Doom for example. As it stands Max Payne and Silent Hill captured the feel of the games the best and are well so far the best vid. game movies there are.

Another review, this time from a gamer's point of view by Destructoid / DC Film Examiner. It's quite interesting:

Matthew "Cowzilla3" Razak wrote:
"What really grinds my gears about the whole thing is that people will credit the movie's shallowness and lack of creativity to the fact that it is based on a videogame, when in reality the game is anything but shallow, and is still one of the most creative games to ever be released."

"Does anyone else remember the dream sequence with the crying baby and the rivers of blood? Had that been in a film it would have been heralded as a brilliant piece surrealist filmmaking; but since it's in a game, it's simply another level with no one talking about the artistic merits of it, despite the obvious jarring direction it took in a game about shooting people. Max Payne (the game) has more artistic value crammed into its opening sequence than Max Payne (the movie) has in it's entirety, but I bet you no one is going to give it any credit when it comes time to release the reviews. "

Hell, most Uwe Boll films are better than Fox's Marky Mark extravaganza! But fear not, Fergle is relentlessly working on the re-boot of P&R as we speak, and will be announcing a few exciting new developments soon.

Ok, I just got home from seeing the "Max Payne" film and first I want to say.. I am not a gamer... I only know Poets thru 2006 MTV European Music Awards.

This movie is not terribly horrible. The first hour was very dull due to being kinda jumpy (moving from one scene to another without the filler story line). After a specific scene where Max Payne really starts beating up a character.. the movie's pace was faster. By the end, you were glad that Max got his redemption over the bad guys. Overalll I would give it a 4/10..... (I didnt want to spoil this movie for anyone, so I was not trying to specific)

Some of the actors in it, their acting career needed help.
Beau Bridges - Stargate the TV series was at an end.
Mila Kunis - Her career on "That 70's Show" is over. (Ok, but she still has a job doing the voice of "Meg" from Family Guy).
Chris O'Donnell - did he do anything since Batman & Robin? Oh gesh, I love Batman but that movie needed help anyway.
Donal Lugue - Did he do anything since the first Blade movie?
Ludacris - Only acting I know he did was on "Law & Order" as a crook.. Imagine that.. Ok Im not a fan of rap music either.

This is all my opinion and if you want to bash what I say.. feel free.

:)

You rawk dude.

I'll say it again: UNTIL GAME FANS START MAKING GAME MOVIES, GAME MOVIES WILL SUCK!

The reason why comic book movies got good is that kids who used to read comic books grew up into Sam Raimi and brought their love to the screen. So we will get good game-movies someday.

I enjoyed the movie, it wasn't mindblowingly awesome but honestly I was afraid it would be something much worse. I'm glad I went to see it. :)
And the Alan Wake trailer before the movie was cool. :P

Whee, 900 posts

Watched the movie last week and was disappointed.
The movie had way too little amount of action scenes, although, most of the action scenes the movie had were pretty good.
The plot differs from the game's plot a lot and the movie's plot ain't that successful in my opinion and as a fan I wanted to see a lot more stuff from the game in the movie but I guess that was too much asked. Also the storytelling was pretty messy. Luckily Mark did pretty ok job anyway.

In spite of that I was disappointed as a fan of the game(s) the movie ain't totally rubbish. It has pretty good atmosphere, the city looks nice and action scenes were fun to watch. It surely ain't an awesome movie but still I've seen so many worse. Too bad this movie wasn't that good as I hoped it to be. Probably someday we'll get a better version made by some true fan of the game :]

And by the way if you do go watch the movie there is a small scene after credits so check it out too :)

Let's face it - if the plot would be all like in the game, it would a nonsense to go to the cinema. I mean - it wouldn't be fun, right? You would know everything about the plot.
I was dissapointed about guns, but I guess I'm just a freak... :P
All in all, I liked it, tho' it was... well, different. ;) Especially the end and Jim Bravura. ;D So i can give one thumb up - a bit shaky, but still - it could get worse than that.

I saw the movie yesterday, and as a fan of the Max Payne games, I truly loved this movie.
They did capture the atmosphere very well, and as far as the whole "the story is too messed up compared to the game" goes, they had to do something different, otherwise there would be no point watching it, would there?

There were some stuff they changed, like Valkyr (which is injected with a needle in the games, and is some sort of a drink in the movie), but I suppose that's for the purpose of selling this movie to a little broader audience, perhaps?

Despite this, I loved how they got the whole Norse mythology in, just like the games, and the scenes with the Valkyries were absolutely epic if you ask me.

I am probably one of the biggest Max Payne fans in the community... but even my love of all things Max couldn't save this movie.
it's like they took a few character names fromt he game and maybe 5 % of the game story, and then they anally raped it using a donkey and the three stooges.

Couldn't agree with you more - and the independent film scene is where it's at! But as long as fans and movie-goers carry on paying Hollywood for the videogame-to-movie adaptations they keep putting out, the longer they'll keep on making them, and the more YOU guys will be left feeling deceived and disappointed. It's high time people made a stand against corporate Hollywood bulls**t.

So with the Max Payne movie being somewhat of a disappointment (I still enjoyed it) I took it upon myself to begin writing my own type of screenplay on how I feel the film should have been. This is just the beginning and there are some differences between this and the game but lets just stay it's far more true to the source material than the movie.

MAX PAYNE

OVER BLACK:
MAX’S VOICE
They were all dead; the final gunshot was an exclamation mark to everything that had lead to this point.

FADE IN:
We see a large building, police cars surround it. A blizzard kicks at its most furious, the camera begins craning up the side of the building to the top; we see MAX PAYNE standing on the rooftop of the building sniper rifle in hand. He’s battered and bloody but his face its calm he looks as if a heavy weight has been lifted off his shoulders.

MAX’S VOICE
To make any kind of sense of it; I need to go back three years… back to the night the pain started.

FADE TO BLACK:
MAX’S VOICE
I was still on the force back then, midtown north precinct. Hell’s kitchen.

FADE IN:
It appears we’re in an old coffee shop; we see Max Payne, standing with him is a balding man with thick rimmed glasses, ALEX BALDER.

ALEX:
So, when are you coming to work for me detective Payne?

MAX:
You’d make me work undercover in some hell hole; sorry Alex Michelle and the baby come first.
(Max pulls a cigarette out of a pack)
See my last smoke; it’s bad for the baby.

ALEX
That’s you Max a regular boy scout.

Max starts to leave walking away from Alex slowly.

MAX
See ya Alex.
ALEX
You’re still on for poker Thursday night… right?”

MAX
Like taking candy from a baby.

CUT TO:
We see a small suburban area, houses lined up next to each other on either end of the street; it’s a beautiful place peaceful. The sun is beginning to set leaving the neighborhood in an orange glow.

MAX’S VOICE
Life was good; I had a house across the river on the Jersey side; a beautiful wife and a baby girl. The American Dream come true… but dreams have a nasty habit of going bad when you’re not looking.

We pan towards one of the houses the lawn is fresh cut, we see Max fumbling his keys trying to unlock his front door.

MAX
Honey I’m home.

We go into the house with Max its quiet, too quiet something’s wrong.

MAX
Michelle honey, anybody home?

MAX’S VOICE
They had given me the best seat in the house, front row center. The sun went down with practiced bravado twilight crawled across the sky laden with foreboding.

Following Max we go further into the house, there’s something sprayed on the wall a V with a syringe going through it.

MAX’S VOICE
Something ugly had been tattooed on the wall, a poison syringe a magic tag full of diabolical meaning.

Going further into the house we hear a phone ringing, Max rushes to the phone. Pictures are broken and shattered the living room is in a mess Max picks the phone up off the table.

MAX
Hello.

We hear a woman’s voice on the phone; it’s calm and full calculating. Her voice is sinister like that of a psychopath.

VOICE
Is this the Payne residence?

MAX
Yes someone’s broken into my house you need to call…

She cuts him off her voice all the more sinister.

VOICE
Good! I’m afraid I cannot help you.

MAX
What? Who is this?

The phone goes dead, Max’s expression begins to whither the happier man we saw earlier now grim and lost almost emotionless.

Gunshots and screaming, Max drops the phone and rushes further into the house, up a staircase he pulls out his handgun from under his coat.

MICHELLE
(Screaming for help) Max!

MAX
Michelle, Michelle.

Max gets to the top of the stairs, there’s a bathroom next to him the door has been flung open, hoping to get the element of surprise on the unknown offenders Max rushes into the bathroom, there’s another door in there, one leading to the room Michelle is in. But it’s been blocked off he can’t get through.

Back in the hallway we see Max run from the restroom and to a door across the way, it’s the room of his baby. A perp comes out dressed in a blue outfit similar to that of a nurse.

MAX
Freeze NYPD

The perp aims a gun at Max; without question Max fires first six shots finally the perp goes down. Rushing into the room Max freezes, motionless. We come into the room with Max a child’s crib has been knocked over there’s a lump on the floor under a blanket a child’s arm sticks out. The child is dead.

MAX
Oh no, no please God no.

Another perp rushes Max but he’s too quick motivated by the death of his child he guns the perp down wasting the magazine he had, he drops the mag pulling out a fresh one he loads his gun. We hear another perp in the other room where Michelle is.

PERP
The flesh of fallen angels.

Max rushes into the room and guns him down as well. All of the perps are dressed in the same nurse clothing as if they’re patients or workers at a hospital. We see a woman lying on a bed, she’s seeping blood from her stomach… she’s long gone.

MAX’S VOICE
I looked at her, she was gone and there was nothing I could do. The bullet holes like rubies on her chest. Everything ripped apart in a New York minute.

Max drops his handgun staring at the body of his now dead wife; tears begin to creep down his face. He walks towards the bed and sits next to her, putting her head in his lap he looks up. The sun sets completely outside and the room goes dark without the light that was once seeping through the windows.

FADE TO BLACK

TITLE CARD
MAX PAYNE

I thought the movie sucked.

The game had great characters, why change them?

Although, Mark Wahlberg did quite okay. Considering the fact that he has never played the game.

Agreed those dark hardbitten noir roles are perfect for Mark Wahlberg. He's pretty much the next Robert Mitchum though still not as great but pretty damn close.

Watched the movie again, it's better after watching it a few more times than once, but like the movie or not I have to say the soundtrack for the film is pretty damn good I keep trying to find the soundtrack but it's not at any store it kinda sucks. It at least has the Max Payne feel.

Just a quick note: the couldn't save much of the game story. Try playing the game and watch The Matrix 1 and you'll get the point. Surely you'll see lots of simillar scenes.

Agreed, however they could have kept a lot of the elements in, Lupino wasn't Mexican, Mona's sister was Lisa, where did Angelo Punchinello go, Nicole Horne was an unimportant character, B.B. was a major character though he only has two major appearances in the game, I could go on.

Anyway, there will be unrated edition of this movie. 2-disc edition includes animated graphic novel. I think this novel can be interesting...
