If I could actually sing at all, I could sing to most songs I like without the music. Unfortunately, my voice is one you don't want to hear singing anything most of the time.

I could sing to most songs I like without the music, especially those that don't 'need' many instruments in the first place - like Don McLean's 'American Pie' (even the long version).
The only problems with that are the following two: One is that I have to have the music playing in my head at the time, meaning I can't exactly choose the song sometimes. And the second one is that the sound of my voice my voice isn't the best when I'm talking and gets worse when I try to sing.

I can't sing even with music: my howling disturbs even the noisiest songs!

i always SOL (not signs of life, bud singing out loud ) with my earplugs in, when im out bicycling (or riding my bike or whatever) so well can sing without the music, but since i always hear music...

do you mean if we're able to sing (i.e. if we're good at singing) or if we're able to keep the tempo of the song without being guided by the music?

i think that she means both, or maybe just being able to sing without being guided?? i don't know, either could really work in this situation

i can do it, but i don't think that anyone would want to hear it. i sing out loud ALL the time when no one is around.

AS for me I sing when know ones around. But, some how someone heard me singing in the store and they asked me to sing in the church.
Really I can't sing so why sould I, go to a church and sing.
I don't even sing on the holiday's for my family.

as for me.. I love singing, and I do it often.
My mother often thinks I'm happy 'cause I'm singing... But I sing just because I have to: to me it doesn't mean I'm happy.

I started taking singing lessons because I felt guilty for obsessing my parents&brother's ears...
.. still I'm really no good at singing
but I must say I've improved (before I was... how do you say when something's worse than terrible? now I'm simply terrible)

About singing on holiday: when I was a child (even 4 years old..), every Xmas I'd put up a "Christmas show" for my family (and forced my little brother to take part in it too... poor boy: he's always hated it! )


back to the question: I think I sing almost better without music, because i tend to go out of tune: if there is no music, you cannot tell what the tune is

oh.. funny story:
i have vacuumed the floor, hearing music from my mp3-player and singing while my brother came down the stairs. i turned around, paused the music, stoped singing and he said to me "i wondered what strange noises come out of the vacuum, but now i know that you are singing"
then he left teh house. my dad told me later it was funny to here me singing and don't know what i was singing.
it must have been very off-key.

Yes, I can sing without being guided by the music. Thing is, I usually sing harmony, rather than the melody, and I never sing it the same way twice.

Funny story:
Once upon a time when in college, I had some free time and I went to the painting room. We had a nice stereo in there and so I put on the radio. Paula Cole's Where Have All the Cowboys Gone? came on. It was popular at the time, and I really liked it, so I started singing along. (Melody!) I must have really gotten into it because when it was over I noticed how quiet it was all of a sudden outside the room. Minutes later my friend opened the door, and said, "Oh, it's you. They thought someone left the radio on." Apparently the entire building could hear me.
