From MTV.com:

Quote:
In what could either be described as "the opening salvo in the all-out war for the future of the music industry" or "the most bizarre marketing strategy of all time," Radiohead will release their much-anticipated new album, In Rainbows, via their Web site on October 10, less than three months after they finished mixing and mastering it.

And while a band fast-tracking its new record isn't exactly breaking news these days (Montreal indie-poppers Stars did it earlier this year with In Our Bedroom After the War), what makes Radiohead's release of Rainbows particularly amazing is that fans will get to determine how much the album will cost to download. Seriously!

The album, helmed by longtime Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, is available in two versions via the band's new, rainbow-y site: as a standard download or as a deluxe edition that comes with Rainbows on both CD and vinyl, plus a second disc of new songs and a lyric book. The deluxe edition runs £40 (about $81). The download version costs whatever you want it to, the price field left blank with only a pair of notes from the band — "It's up to you" and "No, really. It's up to you" — serving as a Jiminy Cricket to potential customers.

As for the actual music on In Rainbows, the group's publicist said on Monday (October 1) that no advance copies of the album — in any format — will be made available, and journalists will have to wait to download the album on October 10. The band did preview much of the new material on tour last year (see "Radiohead Debut Seven New Songs, Please Crowd With Hits At NYC Show" and "Radiohead Marathon, Beck Puppet Show, Partial Phish Jam Mix It Up At Bonnaroo").

With the possible exception of Prince's decision earlier this year to distribute copies of his new LP, Planet Earth, free with a British newspaper, it's a move that's a first for an artist of Radiohead's stature, and it opens the discussion to several issues the record industry has been grappling with for years: Who owns music? How much should music cost? Do bands of a certain caliber (e.g. Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, Sonic Youth) really need a label to survive? (Currently, Radiohead are without a label, having fulfilled their six-album deal with EMI with 2003's Hail to the Thief, although rumors continue to buzz about an imminent deal for the band.)

Fans who purchase either edition of Rainbows will be given a special code to download it from the band's site on October 10. The download version of Rainbows will be DRM-free, which will allow fans to share it freely. Given the rather, uh, laissez-faire approach Radiohead have adopted for the album, we're not surprised.

According to a spokesperson for the band, Radiohead are also planning "a traditional CD release" of the album for early 2008.

Track list for Radiohead's In Rainbows, according to their publicist:

"15 Step"
"Bodysnatchers"
"Nude"
"Weird Fishes/Arpeggi"
"All I Need"
"Faust ARP"
"Reckoner"
"House of Cards"
"Jigsaw Falling Into Place"
"Videotape"

The deluxe Discbox version of the album also features a second disc with the following songs:

"MK1"
"Down Is the New Up"
"Go Slowly"
"MK2"
"Last Flowers"
"Up on the Ladder"
"Bangers and Mash"
"4 Minute Warning"

I can't breathe.

Nope, you're not. :P

I'm still kind of considering whether to get the diskbox thing or not. I don't really have any use for vinyls so still thinking about what to do.
It will definitely be interesting to see how much people actually pay for the download (if they ever release that info).

Btw, if anyone has any experiences about using visa electron in that little shop of theirs (like is it possible, safe, does it work etc.) I would appreciate the info.

That's really great news, Tiia! I bet they will play the songs from the new album, which is amazing. I'd love to see them live, too :)

AFAIK, they are the only band so far to be announced to go to Roskilde Festival 2008 :) And I don't know a single song by them :) :P

You SHOULD! You want me to recommend some songs, that is, if you're really going to Roskilde? :) You really really really must see them, you'll be sorry later if you don't. Well, at least that's my opinion - when I was younger I missed a lot of *good* bands just because I didn't know much about them.

I can post some youtube-links or whatever :)

Are these the same guys who sang "Creep"? I don't know much about the group, but I love that song. Tiia (or anyone!), can you recommend the name of their best album (which you think is the best)? I mean besides this most recent one.
Your thread has really gotten me interested in their work. Thanks. :)

Well, I honestly can't choose a favourite album from them.. they're all very different. Well, OK Computer is certainly the most important one for me personally, and I guess it would be a good one to start with. If you want to start with something "easier", I would recommend The Bends :) (that one has "Street Spirit" on it, which made me fall in love with them in the beginning. I still think the video made for it is the most beautiful music video ever made..)

Amnesiac is also great.. has so many beautiful tracks on it. Kid A is a wonderful album as a whole, and it's also something I listen to a lot when I'm painting or drawing.

Pablo Honey is fun to listen to.. old stuff, innocent rock :)
Also, the EP titled My Iron Lung has that certain something to it. Beautiful & fun.

I guess Hail to the Thief is my least favourite of them all, altho it has some great tracks too.

And finally, In Rainbows. It's just pure heaven.

Thanks Tiia :)
I am going to look up the albums you recommended.
If "In Rainbows" is available, I'll get that one (though I doubt it).

By the way, they played "Carnival of Rust" on VH1-India once again today. I saw it in passing. So they seem to be playing it quite a lot.
Too bad they seem to be ignoring the other videos though!

Thanks again for the info. Much appreciated.

Weeeeell, you might like bands like Live, Lifehouse, Stereophonics, Travis, KT Tunstall, Keane, Augustana, Daughtry, Saybia, Snow Patrol..

I advice you to check them out from youtube.com or something before actually buing any albums :) MySpace could be a nice place to start as well!

I couldn't agree more with Tiia!

Creep from Pablo Honey was the track that made me aware of Radiohead, and Street Spirit from The Bends was the song that really made me take notice and yes, the video is pure magic. The Bends and OK Computer or In Rainbows are the most easily accessible. Hail To The Thief is the one I haven't really listened to very much so I guess it's their weakest album in my opinion as well.

Still waiting for the In Rainbows boxset with 2 CDs and 2LP on vinyl to arrive, ordered it 10 days ago.

I heard the song "All I Need". I LOVED it!
I am really bummed that I can't find this album here.
If this song is anything to go by, this album must be awesome.

Try Youtube.. I think it kinda sucks you can find whole songs posted as "videos" but still.

The album will be in stores in January, if I remember right :)

Radiohead's In Rainbows will be released as a regular CD and as a 12" LP on vinyl early next year in January 2008 as far as I've heard and just as Tiia said. I wouldn't be surprised if it's made available at iTunes as well.

Why bother with iTunes when you can sell music directly from your website? I read many websites stating that iTunes rips the money from the artists, as a matter of fact.

Well, double post had to be done.

I have recently saw that Radiohead had a webcast with the songs from their newest album on 31.12.2007 (great way to get to know their music better!). Fortunately, it's not all lost. You can see the whole performance on YouTube - see the "Scotch Mist". 52 minutes and 31 seconds of great music :)

iTunes was a stroke of genius on the part of Steve Jobs.

When the whole Internet/File sharing thing happened, the Music Industry as a whole completely panicked and started doing crazy stuff, like putting root-kits on their CDs and suing children and colleges and old people hundreds of thousands of dollars per download. It's a desperate industry that sues it's own customers.

Steve Jobs looked at the MP3 thing and saw "hey, how about we take THIS, make it easier and legal and charge pennies for it? Then no one will steal it." And because the record people were too busy panicking, they agreed to letting Apple keep most of the pie.

I'd hope indie labels like PotF's "Insomniac" who know how powerfully important Teh Interwebs is, would be able to negotiate a better deal, but that's just a hope.

I wonder if, in the future, all albums are going to be released like "In Rainbows" was. It's better for the artist, because they keep more of the cut, but I donno, could you get away with that if you're not as established as Radiohead is?
