Just a quick question, though, to anyone else who's going. How much is it going to cost to get in? I've been trying to contact M about it and haven't gotten a response yet.

*Does not compute* hmm.. Admin can correct me on this if I'm wrong but if you're on the guest list, presumably, this means you get admittance free of charge.

Weeell, cheaper to fly to Finland then :)

That was my assumption, but I wasn't entirely sure because it wasn't mentioned anywhere. The last thing I wanted was to fly all the way to California only to find out it would cost even more to get in.

Thanks for the info. I hope you're right.

It's technically for two round-trip tickets (I'm bringing a family member) and a hotel stay. In reality, it's a pretty decent price, but it's still quite a bit for a minimum-wage worker/college student such as myself. And from what I've seen, tickets to Finland are almost 10x as expensive. Believe me, if it actually was cheaper, I would've been to several POTF concerts already.

I'm on the guestlist! My buddy and I are going for sure as he made it on the list too.

He heard from a member of the street team that the event is free for those on the guestlist, so I guess that means that we just need to pay for gas and a hotel. :D

I just found out about Poets being in LA about an hour ago. I'm really scared that I may be too late for the event. The information posted on the website was dated 4/23/2008. I live here in LA and have been listening to Poets for the last 4 years ever since I listened to the ending credits of Max Payne 2...

Anyone have any idea of how many people they're going to be letting into this event?

Oh man I hope they put me on the guest list.

I hate to disappoint you, but 9pm EST is 6pm west coast. You'll need to stay up until 3 :P

I wish I could go, but I have three final exams on Wednesday and I have no way to get to California. You guys who get to go are so lucky! Take LOTS of pictures for the rest of us.

I am going to hate myself for this but I'll hate myself more if I don't at least try.

Is there still room on the guest list?

Important info!

Anyone going to see Poets of the Fall in West Hollywood, CA on 29 April - Read this!

I have been researching the show, finding out everything I could since about 8 am this morning. Here's what I've discovered, confirmed after talking to the manger at House of Blues Sunset Strip and an employee for A&R Worldwide (the company putting on MusExpo).

The website for MusExpo (http://www.musexpo.net) mentions the Hyatt Sunset Strip hotel, but the shows themselves all take place at the House of Blues Sunset Strip. The hotel is for industry folk, so in other words...not us guests of the band. You will need to make your own lodging reservations. (I've already done that and you should too.)

Guests of the band get in for free. Take that, $500...now almost $800 tickets! :P

The House of Blues is not sponsoring the show, they're only providing the venue for the bands.

There are two age groups at the venue, 18+ and 21+. Poets of the Fall's show takes place in the House of Blues Main Music Hall, which is the 18+ venue. Guests of Poets will be able to see all the bands playing in the main music hall for sure. These bands are:
Grand Avenue - 29 April at 8 pm
The Nods - 29 April at 9 pm
Mexicolas - 29 April at 10 pm
Capra - 29 April at 11 pm
Poets of the Fall - 29 April at 11:55 pm

The 21+ venue, if I understand correctly, is taking place simultaneously in another venue, the Foundation Room. I do not know if guests of Poets will be able to get into the Foundation Room, and certainly no one under 21+ will be allowed in. (From the times listed, it appears each show is one hour long and are running back to back so you wouldn't be able to see everything anyway.)

On the MusExpo website, the bands listed on the 29th alternate back and forth between the 18+ show in the Main Hall and the 21+ show in the Foundation Room. The 21+ bands listed, which I'm not sure Poets guests can get into, are:
Ry Cuming - 29 April at 8:30 pm
Frank Turner - 29 April at 9:30
Opshop - 29 April at 10:30 pm
LMFAO - 29 April at 11:30 pm

Hope this helps answer some questions!

So, to confirm...the Poets show is 18+, understood to be free, and is at the House of Blues Main Music Hall. Show up earlier and you can see the other bands that play first, but details for the Foundation Room (21+) show I am not sure...and don't really care anyway because I'm not 21.

This guest-list thing is SO COOL.

I guess it occurred to someone that a crowd made up of just music execs would probably be a pretty dull crowd.

Oh man. I am jazzed. Rock. On. Forever.

Today is the day. I'm up this early because well, I have no choice. Everybody send your prayers, well wishes and positive vibes that everything goes well, that everybody makes it, and that nobody has the flu bug anymore.
The guys are going to kick ass, and well they should, because the people they're playing for need to sit up and pay attention. As I've been saying ever since RR was released, I couldn't be more proud of these guys, and I can't wait to see them again.
They will rock our socks off! And if we don't have socks, then our shoes, and if we don't have shoes, then our shorts! And if we don't have shorts, then they'll throw us out and we'll miss the whole thing, so don't forget those! :D

Anyways, see y'all there!
:P

The gig was awesome!

I had the best spot in the whole building: front-row, dead center at the stage. I got to shake Marko's hand during the first song and introduce myself and talk to him after the show. He's a really cool, down to Earth guy. I didn't come prepared for it, but I managed to get his signature by borrowing a piece of paper from DreamerM who drew the band a sketch. My girlfriend will be very pleased to know this considering she was unable to come to the show and really wanted to. :(

Here is the set list of what they played:
1) Revolution Roulette
2) The Ultimate Fling
3) Lift
4) Locking Up the Sun
5) More
6) Carnival of Rust

It's too bad they didn't have more time...

I would have loved to have heard more...some songs I missed were:
1) Shallow
2) Fire
3) Diamonds for Tears << (I was really hoping for this one, but oh well)
4) Passion Colors Everything

I guess this is the first postmortem of the MuseExpo gig. Lets see how much I remember.

It wasn't a very long set: only around 30 minutes, and it started late. MuseExpo gives all of it's artists certain timeslots and one of the previous acts had gone long, and there was some kind of technical difficulties...

As for the Guest List, the guys at the door couldn't have cared less who we were. They were stamping the hands of any random person who walked through the door. They weren't even checking IDs, I am very sure I saw a gaggle of fifteen-year-old girls sitting around one of the tables. They left before Poets started up though: In fact a lot of the young crowd that was there when I arrived ended up leaving. Such is the lot of the 12am time slot I guess.

In my wanderings I headed up towards the balcony and realized that if I perched at the curve of the stairs I could see behind the curtain to where the Poets were warming up. There was some sort of problem with one of the electric guitars which around three guys whose faces I couldn't see clearly were trying to work out: occationally a single electric cord would cut through the recorded filler music that the House was filling the venue with. And there was Marko, sitting on the edge of the drum platform, looking thoughtful and rolling a water bottle in his hands.

Alright, I thought. I'm excited. If that's all it takes, maybe this will be fun after all.

I gotta say, they sure didn't tone down their act for the smaller numbers. There were only a handful of people down in the front, and not all of them were "fans" as such, but Mark, like the excellent frontman he is, did a great job of drawing everyone in and making us feel individually engaged with his trademark Broken-Doll-like grace. The whole band was in fine form and I gotta say, Mark isn't the only showman up there. Ollie does at least as much with his hands and feet (he even took a flying leap off the drum platform!), Captain has a flare with the keyboards: even when he's not playing his fingers twitch and he bounces up and down like he's aching to be. The drummer also was doing stick-tricks. These guys are not just musicians, they're real performers.

You could kinda see the "who are these guys?" strangers who started out staring blankly gradually start tapping toes, bobbing up and down, and slowly getting more and more into it. It's hard not to be won over by guys who seem to genuinely enjoy their own music, who had so much enthusiasm. Small venue or no, they were still playing LA, and seemed jazzed about it. They pulled out some of their best stuff too: opening with "Lift," going into "Ultimate fling", "Locking up the sun," "More," and others before closing with "Carnival of Rust." By the end of it they had the whole house won over, with even the HoB security guys tapping their feet. All together the set was too short, but it was still totally worth the trip.

When everything was over I managed to meet up with Tiia and The Artist and we lamented not being able to get more people to come, Mark and Ollie came out to talk to the fans, the fans which stuck around despite the House of Blues people saying that the venue was closed and everyone should leave before they got bounced. Apparently the flight was hell and they basically have to turn right around and go back. Still, Mark said that having us fans there "made it worth it" which made me want to hug him. As Ollie said, they made it, they played, it went well, and it was in LA which made it pretty cool.

Also: Ollie speaks excellent English but has a recognizable Finnish accent. Mark does not. He talks like he's from Michigan, except maybe his diction is a little better.

I think they really have what it takes to be big here. Here's hoping they come back soon.

EDIT: ok, so not the first. Vayne, you're welcome for the paper! :D

Sounds exciting and it's cool that guys had time to meet all of you! Too bad they had so little time to play there, sounds like a very short gig, only 30 minutes. Well, who knows, maybe after this gig they will start touring the whole USA? After all, that was just the first step. Let's keep our fingers crossed :)
