At the end of the video a piece of paper comes out of themachine that Marko is in and it looks like it reads "Cor Cordis." Does anyone knows what this means? It sounds latin.

I don't know if anyone has asked this before me, I just joined earlier today, so my apoligies if this has been answered before.[/img]

Thanks for this thread...even I am also having difficulties in understanding it.
Even the lyrics are bit hard to understand except the last few lines of it.
Don't walk away, don't walk away, oh, when the world is burning

I guess the video tells about the importance of love in the life,,,through the candy and the doll it symbolizes that if he had her love in his life than that would have been more colorful.

i think the mask shows that the carnival of rust has become so very old and
dangerous so the mask is needed fr protection against the poisonous atmosphere of the carnival. It adds to the nature of the video.

I think "cor cordis" means "heart". I don't speak Latin, but I think I read it somewhere. :D

I believe the phrase "cor cordis" means "heart of hearts."

This video blew me away. I have wanted to talk about it for a long time.

The guy in the box is a robot fortune-teller, and the signs on either side of him that flash display different tarot cards, including The Star, 9 of Swords, 8 of Cups, Ace of Wands, Knight of Swords, The Magician, The Hierophant, and Strength, which is misspelled as "Strenght" (could be an accident). The girl, by the way, is using American coins.

Maybe you tarot fans out there could fit the meanings of the cards to the story. I don't know tarot all that well.

To Be Continued...

Yes, literally would mean heart of heart (it's singular).

But, at the same time, it's how latin grammar indicates a specific noun. If you look for 'heart' on a latin dictionary you'll find 'cor, cordis' (nominative and genitive), this allows you to understand what declension it is.

Hope I've been clear enough..

Clear as crystal; in a comparable English idiom, though, it would mean the same thing. If it's the possessive genitive, then it would be "heart of MY heart," which totally makes sense in the context of the video. Clearly the Fortune Teller is trying to win back his girl, but fails. By the way, doesn't Mark play BOTH the FT and the effeminate game guy?

I'd like to continue with my analysis of the video:

The story is framed by the appearance of the silver crescent moon face, which suggests an entry into an artificial reality; then the camera flies down the dark abandoned street; the houses curve in on the viewer; looks like some kind of ghetto, or an artificial set representing one. As we enter the Carnival of Rust, the camera approaches the scene already in progress. The Girl is dressed in black, with bitten-down nails with black polish, wearing a gas mask. We never see her eyes or face, and she is the only character in the video whose face we can't see. The carnival looks fake, a fantasy of a carnival; the whole world, actually, looks like a toy. The Girl puts a nickel in and the FT begins to sing. The signs flash and the tarot card is "The Star." (I won't go through the entire set of lyrics since I'm sure if you're reading this, you probably know them already.) The FT is perfect: creepy, flaky, rusty, and sad (kinda how I feel  ), and the lyrics suggest that this is not the first time the Girl has dropped a nickel here...Would you like to hear more? :?:

...Well, here's more!

More about the setting and the characters:

The characters seem to be in varying states of health/decay, from the robust and healthy drummers to the lusty fire-eaters, the "Break for Freedom" guy (who seems to be running the show), the strong man, the tattooed man, and the bearded lady (Delicious), to the FT, and at the very bottom, the one-armed cello players. One of the absolute killer moments in the video is "It's all a game...avoiding failure" and the FT glances fearfully in the direction of the cello twins. Looking at his own future, perhaps?

Naturally, the Girl's gas mask and the varying states of decay suggest that the environment is highly toxic, and the Girl has the opportunity to escape...

Next post...the Girl.

Wow, I think I must be the kiss of death for posts...
Kinda lonely in here...here...here... :?

Well, back to COR analysis.

The girl looks kind of goth with her black party dress, pale skin, black nails, ballet slippers, and of course the gas mask. This world is clearly toxic and is having its effect on many of the inhabitants. The fact that she wears a gas mask separates her from all the others and implies potential escape from contamination. She is tempted to "break for freedom" and the prize offered is a doll. The "implication, insinuation, and ill will" seem to be coming from the carny in the booth (he's kind of Willy Wonka-ish, so I'll just call him "Willy"). However, when the chorus breaks, the signs change to the Nine of Swords, and our heroine is startled by the flash. Then we see the Fire Eaters, who represent sensuality in all its forms, especially "Lust." They seem robustly healthy, albeit more than slightly twisted. They are thriving in the atmosphere that is poisoning the FT, the girl, and the Cello Twins...

To be continued...

I totally agree...Stobe is a genius. This vid is one of the things that has fueled my POTF obsession. Anyone who has been in a dying relationship, or even a period of emotional distance, can relate to the raw fear of abandonment in the lyrics. Thanks for commenting. I will have more analysis, so keep watching this space!

Exactly my thoughts. The lyrics to this song blew me away when I first listened to it. Thank God I did.

I don't know why, but it's very comforting when our inner feelings are confirmed through music, and it feels as if we're not alone.

More analysis to come.

Reno, I hope this helps:

The Star - speaks of peace, calm and hope. Perfect faith. Unity of thought and spirit. The mechanisms of heaven are working perfectly and that everything happens in its proper time. Know that the cycle of nature are true and natural and that after a hard time, a better time will follow.

9 of Swords - In time of trials, reach out and get the conform and wisdom you need. Its near at hand. But for whatever reason, you are working through it alone. Reach out and allow someone to guide and conform you.

8 of Cups - You dallied with desires and fancies that kept you distracted from your path, from doing what you know you must. Its time to turn away from the shallow comforts and forge ahead.

Ace of Wands - Gift of will, of inspiration, of action, of passion, of courage. The start of all ideas and projects. Connections to the higher planes and focus of will, and the ability to achieve goals.

Knight of Swords - Ready for action. Focused and committed. Know exactly what you want to do and precisely how you are going to do it. Your goal is in sight.

The Magician - Aware of the laws of cause and effect, actions and consequences. Power of his will, Aware of the importance of his choices. Focusing will, controls the elemental power which are his tools. By learning to control his will and the elements, he can accomplish that which he chooses. Discipline and responsibility.

The Hierophant - Symbol of humankind’s greatest achievements of understanding the physical and spiritual worlds. Marvelous accomplishments of humankind and the great resources of knowledge that is available to us. Use that knowledge to create with usefulness and beauty. Do not disdain tradition out of hand but see the wonderful things it has to offer. Make sure all beliefs and practices make sense to your own heart and mind before you make them part of your life.

Strength - Reminds you that you have more strength, power and courage than you realize. Learn to live easily with these gifts and use them when appropriate. Do not let your strength or baser desire control you. Conversely, do not deny your own power.

Thanks, Dark Poet,

This would all fit the video, but the question is, who is it directed toward? the FT? the girl? maybe wishful thinking on the part of the FT? personally I think it's what the FT wants. He's trying to sell it to the Girl, who's not buying it. The FT is trying to be those things, "avoiding failure," but ultimately the Girl rejects him and "breaks for freedom." In the end, the FT fails, because the Girl does not save him.

To be contuinued...

But at the end of the video the girl kind of turns back. I wonder why she didn`t read the FT´s telling before leaving the carnival? Maby she needs to see clearly what it is all about?

my theory based on the video and the meaning of the tarot cards with some perspective of the lyrics..

Perhaps the girl is the troubled soul or heart. She wears black and has a gasmask on. She is shameful of perhaps something she did (this is why we dont see her face). The cards tell her that when in time of trouble seek help from others, look within and be strong. The fortune teller has the wisdom to help her but she turns away. Seeking comfort from a unreliable source or seeks material comfort (the doll). Knowing this, the Fortune Teller cries to her demise not to walk away but turn around and seek help. That he will always be there for the true comfort she needs in her life.

I see this to be similar to true friendship. When we are down or in trouble, we should seek the comfort of a friend. I have several friends on the forum (and the real world) and know that when I need their help, they are here for me. And they know in turn, I am here for them.

Good analysis. I particularly like your use of the tarot to explain the girl's motivation.

The doll could represent a number of things: material comfort, as you said, lost innocence (look at the way it's presented to her, not in a nice box or anything), a remnant of childhood. As she leaves, note how everyone waves goodbye almost with a sense of finality: they know she won't be coming back. As you pointed out, Darma, she does hesitate and turn, and she lowers the doll, which is clearly a comfort she has outgrown. But she doesn't take that step to go back, and the FT is already slumped, defeated and dark. They both know he can't give her what she needs. Just as in moving from childhood to adulthood, you can't go back, and we know that this story, this fairy tale, ends that way, because the video ends as it began, with the smiling silver quarter moon.

I just reread the Tarot card lay you gave, Dark Poet, and, if you read it in order, it is the story of the video and the song from the girl's point of view. And there you have proof that she's not coming back. She will go forward and move into adulthood, because staying in her childhood has become toxic to her. :!:
