Okay, I had another doozy. This is the first nightmare I've had in years where I actually felt scared!
Okay, I was some sort of scientist that was experimenting on this mutant protoplasm alien...thing. Rather like the Blob, it could eat anything around it, but not only did it absorb stuff as food, but it absorbed the intelligence of the food. So, say if it ate a cat, it would be almost as smart as a cat. Not perfectly, but almost. Apparently there was a previous outbreak where this thing had escaped, and everyone but a small group of people thought it was destroyed. They killed it with fire, or thought they did...
Somehow my character has "taken care of it" and has treated it like a pet, though being a survivor she knows just how dangerous it is. But, she is careful to never call it an "it." She calls it a "he."
So the dream begins as a coworker tells me they discovered a dead tissue sample, and it might be of this same creature. (Apparently there was still quite a mess from the first attack.) As he brings it in, the creature becomes very agitated as if it knows what's going on. The coworker brings up a screen of the live sample vs the dead one, and it is indeed from the same creature. My character is trying to soothe the creature, but she doesn't have the clout to order her coworker to get the sample out of the room.
As he brings the dead sample closer, he accidentally lets it touch the living sample. The creature absorbs it, and, learning what has all been done to it, immediately mutates and attacks my coworker. My coworker screams for me to escape, and escape I do, but I'm so scared that all I can do is run and hide, and not warn anyone or call for help. All the way down the elevator I can hear his screams.
When the authorities are finally on the scene, I find out that the creature somehow knows where I am and has been looking for me. Now that it is almost humanly smart, it thinks that I was being kept from it. Now it could shapeshift into a nearly humanlike image.
I then have to admit the truth. The reason my character kept the creature alive is because as a survivor, I had discovered that a piece of it was in my head. Thought to be a benign tumor, when they tried to remove it, it..."refused." They couldn't take it out without killing me. I am horrified that my fear caused the death of so many, and so I finally decide to face the creature...and it doesn't hurt me. Because I have a piece of it inside my head, and because I was kind to it before the attack, it thinks of me as almost a mother. It recognizes my voice and my scent, and it will not hurt me. It's intelligence is closer to an infant or toddler. and then I woke up...and wanted to hide under the covers for a while.
