VIIKON LEVY: Poets of the Fall - Carnival of Rust

Tästäkö seuraava suomalainen menestyjä ulkomailla? Poets of the Fall esittelee kakkosalbumillaan vahvaa biisimateriaaliaan taidokkaan itsevarmasti. Tasaisen vakuuttava levy voittaa puolelleen niin raavaan miehen kuin teinitytönkin. Yhtyeen debyytti on viihtynyt listalla jo yli vuoden eikä olisi ihme, jos Carnival of Rust tekisi saman.

Will this band be the next big thing abroad? Poets of the Fall present their powerful song material with a skillful confidence. This convincingly balanced album will charm the grown-up men as well as the teenage girls. Their debut album has enjoyed it's stay on the charts for over a year, and it wouldn't be a surprise if this one did the same.

Poets Of The Fall - Carnival Of Rust (Albumi)
Ensiksikin täytyy mainita, että en juurikaan kuuntele radiota. Ehkäpä tämän takia jokin aika sitten näkemäni video Carnival of Rust teki erikoisen vaikutelman. Biisihän kulki aivan mukavasti, laulajan ääni miellytti korvaa ja videokin oli mukavan timburtonmainen. Mietin, että olisinko tehnyt virhearvion bändin kohdalla, joka kulkee nimellä Poets of the Fall? Kun sitten tarjoutui tilaisuus tutustua tarkemmin ko. yhtyeen uusimpaan tuotokseen, tartuin ilolla tilaisuuteen.

Levy starttaa kohtalaisen mukavalla rock-rämpäytyksellä, joka tukee perinteisesti kertosäkeen laulumelodiaan. Samaa rataa jatketaan seuraavan Sorry go 'Round -rallin läpi ja kolmantena rävähtää soimaan levyn nimikkobiisi. Biisi luottaa rauhalliseen tunnelmointiin, joka ainakin allekirjoittaneelle toimii pienissä annoksissa yllättävän hyvin. Kertosäkeessä on mukavan melodian ohella helposti muistettavat sanat, joissa ei ehkä ole ainesta romanttisen runouden merkkiteokseksi, mutta ne pesevät silti tällä hetkellä metalli/rokkiskeneä vallassa pitävää "uujee, peipe, lets kill aurselvs and as" -riimittelyt mennen tullen. Kelpoa tavaraa tähän asti. Levy jatkaa eteenpäin tunnelmissa, jotka tuovat aika ajoin mieleen vaikkapa sellaisia nimiä kun Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers tai vaikkapa HIM.

Levyltä ei juurikaan suuria vikoja löydy, mutta ainakin omaa mielenkiintoani levyn kuuntelua kohtaan söi melko vahvasti levyn loppupuoliskolta löytyvä akustinen rupeama, joka ei kestä juuri puoltatoista biisiä pidempään, mutta latistaa menon melko täydellisesti. Vaikkakin biisit ovat mukavia ja toimivia, eivät ne juuri toimi alkupään repseämmän ja ehkäpä hieman koneellisemman soundimaailman kanssa.

Mukava pakkaus kaiken kaikkiaan ja saattaa olla kovassa käytössä kevään rientojen alkaessa. Ainoana haittapuolena näen sen, että pitkästä aikaa edes hieman mielenkiintoinen kotimainen rock-veto tullaan todennäköisesti mediassa raiskaamaan täysin kuluttamalla parhaat palat puhki tehosoitossa alta aikayksikön. Tämäkään levy ei saa minua aloittamaan aktiivista radionkuuntelua, todennäköisesti vain välttämään sitä entistä enemmän, sillä haluan nauttia hyvistä biiseistä edes yhtä työpäivää pidempään.

Marko Saaresto

Poets of the Fall’s vocalist Marko Saaresto announced already at the age of 15 on the educational guidance class that he wanted to become a rock star, when the other boys told they wanted to be polices and the girls travel agency officers.
“I’ve done music since I was a little kid and played in bands from the age of 15 more of less ambitiously.”
Years passed by before the young man got to make his dream come true. Before the band’s first album release Marko sold his car, moved to live with his parents and quit his day job.
“ I thought that I won’t do this now I regret the rest of my life. It took its own time to make the decision cause I’m a person, whom things happen later than to the others. Age is bit like money, it’s rarely really matters.”
Sacrifices really were worth it. Poets’ melodic, sensitive songs representing “big sounding” (?) rock first become well-known through computer games’ and programs’ soundtracks, and the band got fresh wind to the sails. The debut album Signs of Life released in the beginning of last year went straight to the top Finnish album chart and has stayed on the Top40-list for a year. The album has been released in several countries as far as New-Zealand and Africa. The band has also got awards, last of all two Emma-awards. The band’s success can be predicted to continue along with the new album Carnival of Rust. The touring has already begun.
“It’s great to success, but if some reason this all ends I’ll just think this was great as long as it lasted. I can’t imagine what our success looks like from the outsider’s point of view. I heard one day that 4 people had taken tattoos from the picture I had drawn. Feels so inconceivable to me.”
Poets of the Fall draws it’s charm, including the band’s name, on the opposites of life, birth and death, despair and joy, happiness and grief. The upcoming album’s title track Carnival of Rust was planned to be the title song from the very beginning. The lyrics of the song Marko rewrote many times.
“The song tells about world being totally wicked. The singer experiences that he can’t survive without his loved one, who’s the bright spot in the darkness.”
Marko, having found his own bright spot in the darkness, knows what he’s talking about but says discussing about relationships is no good.
He says that artists have always made people think.
“At my best I am able to express something in my lyrics that has never before been put in to words. I feel like I’ve failed if our music doesn’t revive feelings in the listener.”
Rock’n’Roll life is hard but Marko knows how to stay in balance with it. He mentions meditation, acupuncture, feng shui, yoga and tai chi. As bad habits he counts eating huge amounts of candies and coke. Being satisfied to his life Marko doesn’t stress for he’s learned there is also a solution to the problem.
“Little things, like good things people do, make me happy.”

Englanninkielinen rock on Suomessa kovemmassa huudossa kuin aikoihin, mutta Poets Of The Fall on harvinainen ilmestys genressä. Kun valtaosa nuorista kotimaisista kitarabändeistä jäljittelee 80-lukuista popheviä, POTF tekee 90-lukuista jälkigrunge-jenkkirockia. POTF on takuulla ainoita kotimaisia yhtyeitä, jonka kohdalla vertaukset miljoonabändeihin kuten 3 Doors Down, Hoobastank, Incubus tai Creed ovat täysin kohdallaan. Poetsit eivät jää piiruakaan näistä jälkeen.

Vaikkei Amerikan jälkigrunge ole täällä saanut kunnon jalansijaa, on POTF menestynyt hyvin. Yhtye osaa genrensä tyyliseikat erinomaisesti, bändi osaa kirjoittaa tarttuvia ja aivan älyttömän pateettisia rocksävelmiä, ja yhdistää ne dadaistisen romanttisiin sanoituksiin. Carnival Of Rustin keskitempoinen nimibiisi on erinomainen esimerkki lähes täydellisestä POTF-sävellyksestä: eteerisen pehmeä intro johtaa lopulta kivitalon kokoiseen kertosäkeeseen, jossa tanssitaan himon taivaiden alapuolella.

Carnival Of Rust on miellyttävän epämuodikas rocklevy, jonka suurin miinus on kohtuuttomasti lapsellisia hevisooloja tiluttava kitaristi ja muutama tosi haukotuttava ralli.

Rokkivaihde silmässä.

Poets Of The Fallin vuoden takainen Sings Of Life -debyytti on viime vuosien suurimpia sensaatioita suomalaisessa rockmusiikissa. Yli vuoden Top-40-listalla sinnitellyt levy saa nyt kovan seuraajan.

Carnival Of Rust on luontevaa ja paikoin turvallisenkin kuuloista jatkoa; esikoiseen tykästyneet löytävät 12 biisin joukosta helposti omat suosikkinsa. Parannustakin on tapahtunut. Siinä missä Sings Of Life tuoksui peräkammarin pro toolsille, on Carnival Of Rustille tarttunut oikean rokkibändin jytää. Soundit ovat mukavasti järeämmät ja bassokin kuuluu. Pääosassa ovat kuitenkin edelleen laulaja Markon tunteikas tulkinta ja kitaristi Ollin nokkela kitarointi.

Useimmat levyn biiseistä osuvat maaliin. Carnival of Rustia, Looking Up The Sunia ja King Of Fools ovat häpeilemättömän kaunista ja tarttuvaa rokkipoppia. Ilmiselviä hittejä. Niiden jälkeen "ihan mukiinmenevät" raidat (kuten esim. Gravity) kuulostavat itseään huonommilta.

Poets Of The Fallin kudelma 80-90-luvun poprockista tuoksuu loppupelissä 2000-luvulle ja sisältää jenkkityylisyydestään huolimatta ripauksen perushärmäläistä synkkyyttä.
