What an amazing and beautiful video! I just got the CD today and have already watched the video like 3 times...I was wondering if any of my fellow poets fans have any ideas/theories about what the story/stories/meaning is behind the awesome song and video?

I asked the same thing in a previous post. And I dont have any thoughts at the moment, I'm still thinking about it, lol. I'll post back if I come up with anything.

Well, here's what I gathered:

Right away I noticed the whole theme of corrosion - wear and tear. The fortune teller in the box covered all in chipped paint, the beat up old cello Olli and Cap' are jamming on. I'd say the whole carnival is just... everything not right.. Insinuation.. Ill will.. Implications.. like the song says.

In the middle of this carnival you've got the girl in the video.. and she seems to be above it all.. but there's always that feeling that she's going to sink in with it all. So when she meets with our lovable Carnie-in-a-pink-suit, you can see he's something of a trickster, and I would say is trying to draw her into this whole corrupted carnival.

But, she wins. She leaves the carnival. May not look like much but she rises and overcomes this whole corrupted carnival. Escapes all of the bad things it holds.

Then you have the song's sorrowful ending, a fading plee : Don't walk away. The fortune teller in the carnival.. he's like the last oasis of hope in the carnival, and I see him as something of a warning. He stays amidst all of the bad things in the carnival to make sure people like the girl don't get caught up in it.

In which case, you'd think he'd be happy to see her leave, but that's not the case. As much as he loves the fact she's escaped all of the corruption, he can't help but wish she'll stay with him.. be another light inside of all his darkness..

Sorry for ranting 8)

I have not seen the music video, but I have listened to the whole song of CoR. The first thought that jumped into my mind was the scene from the Pilgrim's Progress that had to do with Vanity Fair. I actually lent my copy of the book to someone for the moment so I can't reference the exact part in the book, but if anyone has read it maybe you know what I'm talking about. The Pilgrim's Progress was written by John Bunyan.

Yeah, some of that makes sense, except the fact that the carnie in the pink suit was actually laughing and enjoying the sight of seeing her win, so that theory doesn't make sense when you look at that part. I do understand the "luring her in" aspect of it. Her innosence leads her to participate in their supposed game that can't be won. That's usually how carnivals work, you can never win those things. The only thing I can come up with about the gas mask is along those same lines of corruption. She can't live without it on becuase the impurities around her would otherwise sufficate her. But when I read the lyrics, much of that doesn't have anything to do with the lyrics itself. I think I'm trying too hard, but I enjoy this, its like understanding the work of Da Vinci. That's all I have for now, but I'll keep thinking about it, unless the poets themselves explain it sometime soon.

EDIT: Is there a translation of the Making of Video around, I thought someone had it, but I can't find it. Do they mention the meaning of some of the things in the video?

It is good that I'm not a mod. We would have more closed than active topics by now.

I think the doll is a kind of symbol of comfort.

When the gril leaves the carnival, she realizes that there is no comfort in the doll.

I love the fact that she donates the lollypop to Cap and Ollie!!!!

i think guys alot of things that may lead to the meaning of the clip carnival of rust

first i wanna say that all the tracklisting of the album is all related to the clip. so please help me if u find me wrong....

1- the song fire refers to the fire flames that was made by the man and the woman on the table
2-sorry go round (merry go round as said in the song) its the merry go round game in the clip as well.
3-lockin up the sun... not sure about it, but i think that the sun is locked up and the moon appears in the clip
4-gravity...not sure also but i think its the gravity when she drop the coin to the two players, also the word unpredictable that was quoted in the song (unpredictable fortune , my past.....)under the container he's in all the song, its written beneath him.... seems that he was in a fortune in the past or sth.
5- king of fools, maybe he was the king of fools, or the tatooed guy is that king as he was surrounded by many people in the clip
6-roses, not sure at all, but in the break for freedom game u may notice that the game looks like a rose, also the booth around him is surrounded with the lolipop shape (looks like roses as well)
7-desire it was the desire of the girl going to put the coin without hesitaition in his box to play the song.
8-all the way for u....totally dont know
9-delecious... its the name of the tatoo on the man's arm in the clip...
10-dawn.... at the end of the clip when she stayed in the carnival till dawn came.. u find the moon fades in the end...

I'm not really that sure to be honest, but for the song at first i thought it was about some girl and how life is like souless in a sense because of the "machine" type connotation, definitely with the mention of "rust" and being in the rain is compared to being pretty depressing :)

But after watching the video... it scared the crap outer me lol I thought the carnival was a metaphore for his heart or love or whatever was like a play ground of sorts but it got ruined without her love :o

But now... i have no idea lol

EDIT: oh and i almost forgot, after reading the post above, i realised that those things do kinda link to the video :? i'm still not too sure anyways! :D

Seemed kinda obvious to me that the Fortune Teller's signs were all tarot cards.
The cards that appear are
-The Star
-The Magician
-The 9 of Swords
-The High Priestess
-The Ace of Wands
-King of Swords

I don't exactly have time to analyze each card. But, it's something no one's posted yet.

Also, i've noticed that game is called "break for freedom"... She breaks 2 plates visibly, but another plate explodes in her eyepiece afterward, sans ball. This could signify that she's won her own freedom, the freedom of the doll (potentially another innocent), and had hoped/envisioned the freedom of the fortuneteller, reinforcing the idea of the only light of hope in the darkness of the carnival was the girl and the fortuneteller.

yes, in the eyepiece, there's a ball zooming into the plate, but we don't see her actually throwing it, hence "visualization". good, catch though..i had to do a frame-by-frame to catch the little blur on here.

Hmm.

Don't think anyone's mentioned the ticket that comes out of the machine at the end yet if you want something else to add into the mix.

It looks like it has "Cor Cordis" written on it - don't blink it must only be visible for about a half-second!

For all you lot that don't know Latin, that's "Heart of the heart"

COR

carnival
of
rust.

brilliant juxtaposition of "when the heart is yearnin'" with the heart in latin...and the initials of the song.
