I have so many things I'd want to write now, but no way to get it out of my head. Ah well, that's only the normal situation :P

One tip that usually does it for me is to write by hand. It can do wonders moving away from that blank page on the screen and just sit down and write, feeling the beauty of the craft flow out through your fingers. :)

New tip: (Ryan, thanks for the inspirational conversation about this tip)
Play with words. Use all you know to present everything you want to...
Try to play with every single word... It's funny and it helps to write... Use you imagination to "act" with words... Make a mess of ambiguous sentences. That could be really helpful for your writing...

Good tip. =) I've actually used it on my own before - sometimes when I see an interesting new word I'll immediately think of it in a sentence, and then I can build off of that sentence for a short scene/story.

I'm also one of those people that play things like the 'freerice' game (freerice.com if you've never heard of it) for fun, though, so... :D

Oh I love the tips here, a good thing to do when you're stuck is to sleep on it, the brain gathers information by day and processes it by night, I read that.

Although sometimes I find that some of my best stuff is written on the least of sleep...

Also when novel writing I have this book that I call "the book book" (yeah... :D) and in which I write all sorts of stuff. It can be song quotes, it can be sketches that I draw, names and background stuff on characters, outlines of chapters, plot ideas, etcetera. If not else, even when not in the mood of writing, I can always open up the book and be inspired. ;)

Something I spoke of with Marvin today made me think about deadlines, too. Sometimes it helps putting up goals for yourself to reach :)

time for the most oftenly blocking poet to join this thread ;)
i've had my fair share of writer's blocks (even more than my share, anyway), and it seems to me it's not in what you do, how you think or what someone tips/tells you, but in the inspiration itself that puts you in or out of a writer's block - i mean i hadn't written anything for 4 months or so, i could easily put the blame on my university exams and lack of time and so on, but it is just the fact that nothing meaningful actually happened to me in those 4 months, lost in studying there was no inspiration. so tips, as useful as they may be when you have the general idea, the outline, the rhymes etc. do not always work.

otherwise - music, playing with words in your head, jotting down rhymes on the last pages of notebooks, a book book(i call it a life book) are all pretty good ideas to help you out WHEN you want to write, you have an inspiration but no idea how to turn it into a meaningful work of written art :)

(damn, i need to write something already!!!)

Dust, I think you got a good point. :) There aren't many who can just sit down and decide that now is the perfect time to write. Of course you gotta hit it when you're in the right mood and you're in the right wave. But if you're really frustrated about your writer's block I still think that reading a few tips and hints might get you started down the right direction. 8)

If not else, you can always come here to vent. :D
