Good deal.

Crochet hooks are fairly inexpensive and easy to find. Assuming you're using a worsted weight yarn, I'd stick to hooks in the I to K range. My personal favorite is the J. ^_^

Amigurimi Dude Pattern: http://www.crochetme.com/media/p/88885.aspx
(A very basic doll pattern that can be customized for lots of things. My first plushies came from this pattern.)

Magic Adjustable Ring technique: http://www.crochetme.com/forums/t/28917.aspx
(I think this is what you were referring to...if not, please let me know.)

Amigurimi for Beginners: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1cp8i3rYzI
(If you don't like the magic ring method, try this.)

Crochet Pattern Central: http://crochetpatterncentral.com/directory.php
(Free patterns for all sorts of goodies from all sorts of sources, including regular people like us. ^_^)

I hope those help.
