Hey guys! Sorry if this is a dorky idea. But this is such an international forum that I think we'd be fools not to take advantage of it!

For example, il3hameed (a Kuwaiti) and Gogo (An Egyptian) taught me some Arabic words:

Salam: Hello/goodbye (informal)
Akl: food
ketab: book
rasem: paint
waraa: paper
Nar: fire
moheet: ocean
"bahr: sea

"Mah el salama!" Take care!

"kiss ulmick ya hmar!" is what you yell at the jerk on the freeway who just cut you off.

Dandelion, a Fin, taught me a few words in Finnish!

hikka: hiccups!
kala: fish
nukka: sleep
liesi: Stove (lee-ee-see)
uuni: oven
uni: dream!
Unelmoija: Daydreamer!

Everyone cal me Unelmoija-M from now on! :D

So just post some words here: curse words, greetings, or household objects! It's nothing flashy but over time learning a handful of words a day "could really make a big difference in communication!" (as Dandelion said!)

What do you think?

I think it's a great idea! Especially for those of us over here in the states, it would be cool to learn some new languages!

Great idea indeed.
Lemme share something from our Slovak language:

Ahoj ................... Hello
Dobrý deň .......... Good day
Dovidenia ........... Goodbye
Jedlo ................... Food
Priateľ ................. Friend
Jadrová hlavica ... Nuclear warhead

Interesting topic :) but i think learning the correct pronunciation is hard for foreigners(at least for me :P )
I'm iranian and 'Ketab' and 'Salam' have similar meanings in persian but 'Salam' only means "Hello"
btw (In Arabic) "bahr" means sea not "bahar"

Whoops! Fixed! Thanks for the catch.

Yah pronunciation is hard...if you could break your words down phonetically, that'd be a help. It's not a must though, this stuff is just for fun.

So do we get to learn any Persian OM??

il3ameed :P

and then it isnt necessarily bahr everywhere, in the actual arabic language, it is bahr.. but in Kuwaiti its bahar.. so both can be right..

Ma'a al salama can also be used as good bye..

UMIK! not ulmik...
umik for a guy
umich for a girl..

;) just wanted to fix up a few things :P

i'm pretty sure none of you can say this..
Khashim: nose

and one of my favorite words...
chub: shut up :P

and if you want to shut some one up, the alternative for chub, and the also ruder alternative is: ikil khara for a guy and iklay khara for a girl..

I can pronounce a few of those words... finnish, polish and french mostly. I think I can even pronounce the welsh lines
Anyways, a bit of German for you:

Hallo - hello
Auf Wiedersehen - goodbye
Tschüß - bye
Kralle - claw
Gesicht - face
Liebe - love [noun]
Danke - thanks
Ich heiße ... - my name is ...
Herbst - fall [season]
Dichter / Poet(en) - poet(s)

well... yeah, that's it for now. Spelling is a bit hard to describe in english, but if you want me to, I'll try... just not tonight ;)
