Does anyone on this forum like to cook or bake? I'm a culinary-addict, and being a vegetarian, I make a lot of meatless dishes. Feel free to share family recipes here or dishes that are just important to you or your culture. =)

I make an awesome coleslaw. :D Here's the recipe:

1 cup mayo
1 tbsp light cream
1/4 cup horseradish
1/2 tbsp white vinegar
1 tbsp sugar
salt/pepper
1 tsp ginger root, ground
pinch fennel seed
3 cups shredded cabbage
3 cups shredded carrots
1/4 cup sliced scallions

Here is a recipe for the simplest PEANUT BUTTER COOKIES

1 cup peanut butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg

Mix all ingredients together, roll into balls, flatten into coin shapes with a fork,, and then bake for 10 minutes in preheated oven at 350 deg F.

They do sound sweet, but pretty good too. :D You don't use any flour or baking agents?

I used to cook a lot! My father had a girlfriend that loved to cook! She was a great cook and my mother had never been a good cook at all. She was brought up with servants who did all the cooking so she never learned. I was a teen and I was really impressed with Paula's (my dad's gf) cooking and I asked her to teach me. I even learned to make a cheesecake that looked and tasted like one from a bakery.

Well now I don't cook so much anymore.

I know you like to cook Em! :)

To be a total cliche, I'm addicted to anything that I can drench in maple syrup. Whole wheat waffles are my current love affair, lol.

The peanut butter cookies are similar to the one in the recipe I use, 'cept it doesn't have metric tonnes of butter in it! :D Although what do they look like when they're done? It doesn't seem like they've got much to hold 'em together.

Cooking and baking is fun! Though I cook more than bake, but it's fun to do both :D
Btw, I just made really good pasta salad. It included:

Pasta (I used penne)
Cucumber
Tomato
Bread cubes (toasted in oil)

And some black pepper to spice it. Yummy! :P

If you eat too many brownies, you will "taste the blame"...

Got me applepie into the oven and now I let the oven work its magic :)
Weekend's mission: Poets of the Fall cookies. (Thanks for the great idea VesQ!)
I came up with 4 different flavors that work with song titles.
Fire: Chocolate-chili
Carnival of Rust: Peanut butter
Locking Up The Sun: Lemon curd
Roses: Pink marshmallow

I expect them to be Delicious, not Illusion & Dream
...and if they really do succeed, I'll post the recipe(s) and pictures :D

As I promised... here are the first half of POTF cookies, they came out alright, in my opinion the LUTS cookies taste nicer and look better, but that's just me.
First the photos. (And yes, they're not the prettiest, I'm not much of a baker :P)

Image
Fire: chocolate-chili

Image
Locking Up The Sun: lemon curd

And then to the recipe. What I did was take a basic cookie recipe and added some (8 thin pieces) melted chili flavored dark chocolate into half of it and 1,5 tablespoons of lemon curd to the other half. Lemon curd is quite sweet so I reduced the amount of sugar in the dough to a half and then added a wee bit of sugar (a tablespoon) to the chocolate dough, because the dark chocolate wasn't sweet the way the lemon curd was.

I'm not going to write the actual recipe here, cos people all over the world use different measures and I'm not going to start converting for everyone. So do what I did. Take your basic cookie recipe that you know is a good one, and modify it a little :) Mine turned out quite alright, yours should too ^^

Oh, the Fire cookies look so yummy... Is the base you used some sort of murotaikina (literally cereal-dough, though I think there must be a real name for that kind of dough...)? Like, flour, butter, sugar, eggs?

Yes, it's murotaikina. The online dictionary I use named it "short dough for cookies and sweet pies". Anyway, I sent you a private message about it.

both kinds of cookies must be very tasty ^^

A song that would really make great for cookies is... (easy): Delicious. we should try to come up with some recipe for that.
They should have a 'delicious dark appeal'... maybe with licorice? I'm not even sure licorice cookies exist XD
Or maybe dark chocholate?

That's why I serve mine where all sense is lost => the Internet....

But the next step to develop the product is to form different shapes: like Morpho or an orange pierced with needles or something........ Of course this is just playing with ideas... Ignore me if I sound bossy............

Yes you sound bossy, you're not my boss so stop bossing around :P
A nice idea but but do you know how difficult it's going to be shaping every individual cookie to a shape as difficult as the morpho? Tee mulle muotti, niin sitten ehkä onnistuu

I absolutely love to do it! I don't do it very often though...I live with my Grandma and it's her way or no way...Haha

So I'm trying to decide on a cake for my Dad's birthday!
There are many ideas swirling around in my head but I just can't find that one perfect recipe. I've ruled out fondant because I'm not experienced enough with it. (Unless it's marsh mellow fondant)

He LOVES apple pie, but my family is against me making a giant apple pie. Haha.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Hey Siemonster :)
I merged the topic you started into an already existing thread about the same topic.

Aaaand, I don't know much else about cakes except how to ruin them (I like to alter the recipes and then they always end up a disaster for some strange reason)...
But why not make a compromise. Your dad likes applepie, your family wants a cake, so...
Caramel Apple Cake. And I'm sure that's not the only option, there were quite a few different apple cake options. I don't have any idea how easy or difficult any of them are to bake, though. Or how delicious they are.

Hi Siemonster! :)

If your family doesn't want a giant apple pie, what about several mini-apple pies? :) individual sizes can be long to prepared but I've always thought it's be prettier ^^

Does your dad like anything else? According to his tastes you can try to think about simple but delicious cakes! There are many awesome food blogs out there, I'm sure you'll find something that you and your dad will like

Oooo, what a thread! :D I love making food. Usually I bake but if I have a chance I willingly cook too. And the point is not eating and not even cooking itself, but the final result.
Unfortunately, I want to try something different every time but that's not possible and very often I'd like to try an interesting recipe but then it turns out that it needs too unusual or expensive ingredients. Luckily they can be replaced in most cases.

I baked today, just something very boring and ordinary though. Don't know if there is a better translation but 'mocha pieces' is a straight one, mokkapalat in Finnish. They're horrible cloying and cause a stomachache after one small piece, urgh.

Tomorrow I'll do something realer, planned to give a try to a sacher cake. Excited! Hopefully I get the ingredients.

:) Currently my sister-in-law loves to shake a cake. It's simple and mostly the cake is ready in a very short time. When searching the internet there are many webpages where you can find yummy recipes. Just my 2 cents.

Hi DSOL and Mayday Call!

It's fine. :D I was looking for a thread and couldn't find it, so I just started my own. Hahaha.

Ohh! I never thought of an Apple Caramel Cake...(it even sounds delicious!) The several mini pies is a good idea, too! But I am unsure of the amount of guests!

I started thinking about themes and stuff for the cake for the past few days. Would it be simple and decadent, or creatively delicious?

I thought about making him two cakes, and turning them into boobs with some pale colored marshmallow fondant, then making a lacy fondant bra or something. (My friend made Boob cupcakes for her brothers birthday, it was hilarious.) But I thought about his friends and how most of them would bring their kids (which some are under 13), so that idea was out. Haha

Then all of a sudden, all of these recipes for icings came into my view, but they all contained liqueur! haha.

I wanted to do a Belgian Mocha Cake, but the mocha icing calls for Amaretto or Disaronno!

Maybe I should just make one alcoholic style cake, and then make a bunch of red velvet cupcakes or something...hahaha.
