cor cordis, a reminder means heart of the heart

here are my thoughts,

where she puts the quarter is the center of love in this songs story, it represents the pain of unrequittedness, be trapped and all, the girl outside keep her distance...

olli and captain playing the cello together represents the relationship mark sees, but that the girl resists, the saddness as they play is the girl speaking...

the gas mask is another representation of resisitance....

the spiral rollercoaster, is the temptation of the rabbithole, from the matrix, so to speak, and being drawn in as if she wants to stay.... the gas mask, or her world, her vision of what she should be, who she be, shields her from the carnival of rust....

the rest of the surrounding represents the marks happiness and well being, however, the carnival of rust, as a whole, is a metaphor representing a world where mark is tired of living in, where happiness is a kiss away, a kiss he cannot get from whom he wants; the carnival of rust is also a metaphor of a 'devine routine' as well as possibly chasing after love, getting close then leaving...

'dont walk away, when the heart is yearning'
constantly leaving, contantly coming back always keeping a distance, teasing, showing signs she loves but does not follow all the way, and avoiding a kiss...

Just saw the video... aha, took me long enough.

Anyway, the very few screenshots I had seen always reminded me of SOMETHING, but I couldn't put my finger on what... well, after the first five seconds of the video it just came to me: Syberia. Anyone played that game? Especially if you remember the violins puzzle...

Mm. That's all.

omg, I loved that series. You're right though, it has the same quality and style that game had. Now I want to play those again.

On the CoR video there is a scene where two drummers play. If I´m not mistaken they are Tapio and Jari. Then there is a close up of Tapio which fades away, changing to Jari.

In my mind this symbolises bye bye to Tapio and welcome to Jari.

If I´m right, I´m right and if I´m wrong, I´m still right

Hmm, I wouldn't call Syberia "dark"... it's rather sad, than dark.

And yeah, there's definitely Chocolate Factory influence - but more like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, the first movie. It's all dark and twisted and extremely weird (I know, I know, Tim Burton's like that too, but you'd have to see the old movie to understand)

Willy Wonka/Syberia crossover? Sounds like my kinda video :]

(and Mark reminds me of Oscar...)

thank you ^_^;;

I could be just making things up, because I've seen both Chocolate Factories more times than I'd like to admit (and more than I can remember) and I'm a HUGE fan of Syberia :P

Can't really come up with any different explanations than the ones already posted here..

But what I can tell is that it sure was scary. Way scarier than that last night horror movie where the house tried to kill everyone in it :P
I mean my first expression was like:
Carnival.. ok.. the name of the song is Carnival of rust.. makes sense (duhh)
Then this girl walking there with no one else around with a gas mask on.. thought the next thing she was gonna do was draw an AK-47 from her pocket and starting gunning people down. Or use some sort of psychic powers (Sorry, seeing the gas mask instantly reminded me of Psycho Mantis.)

Really great video with lot of references.. but I'm sure to not to watch again in the middle of the night when I'm alone

for a while I thought it was carnival of Lust. I should get a hearing aid.

I thought it was more sad than scary. Although the people were pretty freaky. But the way the girl with a gasmask lay her head on the dolly, I just thought 'awww'. :P And the part where she goes deeper and deeper into a spiral, that was a little comical. And them ballet shoes are damn ugly.

Sorry I've no deeper thoughts on it so far. :P

Ahh, spotted another Syberia reference o_O;; I'm a nerd, I know.

Four elephants behind the fire-eating lady = four mammoths in front of Barrockstadt University.

I'm crazy, I know -_-;;

I registered just to comment to this very conversation.. That video.. Whoo. Sent shivers down my spine when I first saw it. And it still does.

Sorry if I overanalyze some things or not, but this is how I see the story according to the lyrics. A bit garbled and confused on some parts, bear with me. I'll perhaps borrow others peoples thoughts too but that's not forbidden I think?

----

For starters. The fortunetelling machine, the man inside - he's the other central piece of the story. He's the counterpart for the girl and likewise she for him. And it's a lovesong. What kind of a lovesong is it? I don't know much about love.. But a tortured one I suppose.

In to the video:

She puts the coin in and the fortuneteller springs to life and sings: "Do you breathe the name, of your savior.. In your hour of need?" Somehow I feel that this is an important piece of unraveling the mystery, but it comes more relevant nearer the end of the song.

Now about the circus people... The lyrics sung over them paint them as somehow bad, and they are. They always smile and they smile in a way like they're hiding something. They're not truly happy at all. Perhaps they are cursed to run the carnival for an undefined eternity and have become mad, who knows. I really won't go in to that much detail to think about them too much.. Though they're a fascinating and important part of the video and the story being told.

I do agree on some people that they're trying to corrupt her in some way, and that the gas mask is her protection from their "ill will" in a way.

"All in the name
of misbehaviour and the things we don't need
"
...Something worth pointing out, she leaves her lollipop for the players when this is sung. Perhaps she realizes that she doesn't need it. And the lollipop represents vanity in my opinion, I have always somehow viewed lollipops in a way that they're just.. Well. How could I describe it.. Needless. Especially those gigantic ones like the one on the video - many people don't even eat them whole and throw them in the thrash.

One thing I also thought very meaningful is the way how the circuspeople watch her after she threw the lollipop away, and how they look at her once she has won the doll - replacing her vanity with something else and comforting herself. So in a way they managed to corrupt her - she forgets the fortuneteller and doesn't hear him pleading for help.

And it happens to be, in the end, what reads on the paper is "Cor Cordis" which has been many times translated here "The heart of the heart". Well what I could gather from Google and Wikipedia it just means "heart", but I'm not going to argue about what it means, I'll just say that both things somehow emphasize the word "heart."

So what can we think about this?
Does he eject his heart for the taking?
And maybe that's why she stops walking, when she suddenly realizes that what she "saved" from the midst of the cursed world isn't what she should have. It was him she should have helped but it's too late now - the carnival stops and the gates will soon close.. And she stands alone in the middle of a street in a dark world with nothing but a lifeless, human shaped object by her side.

-------

What I think this tells about the song, what the song means? I'm not exactly sure. I feel that the song is about losing someone (well, duh..) and that how everything is not lost, the other person is willing to try and make things better, because he/she still loves him/her and knows that the world is a harsh place when you don't have someone by your side. But the other has given up and it doesn't matter what the other person says, he/she has made up her mind and leaves - perhaps from even the other persons whole life, not just the relationship.

Funny, that.. Because that is exactly what is happening to me. Well perhaps that's why I see the song how I see it. There's many ways to interpret things in the song and in the video and it depends on people what they see in it..

That's pretty much all I can think of now.
(P.S. How's this for a first post? =] )
