Thanks Porthos13 for finding this interview!
Ruutu.fi June 14th 2012How has age influenced Poets of the Fall’s productions?Interviewer: Poets of the Fall, the band that released their 5th album Temple of Thought this spring is getting up on stage in a while but let’s have a bit of a chat with the guys first. Exactly one year ago you were here at Helsinki Day concert to open up the festival season. Marko, Capu and Olli, what are your memories from one year back?
Marko: I remember it very well. It was a really hot day and I had the feeling that every show we had then was all about showing some underwear and so…
Interviewer: I can’t remember what they were like.
Marko: I think they were alike to what I’m wearing today, but not the exact same pair.
Interviewer: You’ve washed them up in the meanwhile…
Marko: Yes! Well, I am bit of a… can’t really say a man of singular taste, but anyway… But it was really cool, it felt like the crowd was huge and our gig went wonderfully well and… Well, it somehow was a really nice thing.
Interviewer: You’ve taken on a rather modest amount of gigs for the summer this year. Is it because you’re starting to age and the summer cottage life holds more attraction, or what’s behind this?
Captain: I don’t have a summer cottage.
Olli: It’s an interesting question. On one hand it’s really fun to get a bit of holiday time. It’s looking to be a really tight autumn for us, so it’s great to have a short vacation, 2 weeks during July, it’s a rare treat. It always does you good.
Interviewer: Capu doesn’t have a cottage, but are you guys summer cottage people in general?
Marko: Of course, a cottage and a dock are great things.
Interviewer: What’s the absolute to-do list, the top three things to experience?
Marko: Why don’t you two come up with something quickly?
Captain: Mosquitoes.
Olli: Barbeque.
Marko: Oh, I don’t know… some kind of a desperate, blundering trip somewhere with a holiday headline. That must be it.
Interviewer: Your latest album has a theme that everything has at least two sides and when you look into it even deeper you can find many more angles. Does age have something to do with losing a certain absoluteness of view?
Marko: Yes and I’m really glad it has because you no longer have to bang your head against every wall and you can just use the door for a change.
Interviewer: So it’s worked well for you?
Marko: It’s gradually starting to. Nowadays I can spot the doorknob.
Interviewer: Your music has many different elements to it, you’re familiar to many from the world of games as you have written music for different game soundtracks. But if you could choose any kind of a movie from any director, what kind of music would you choose to do and what would the movie turn out to be like?
Marko: Mmmh, oh my goodness. I suppose… This has been asked for so many times and I always end up saying different answers so the next time I’ll probably think differently again but probably some kind of a edgy adventure movie… At one point I was thinking along the lines of Pirates of the Caribbean and Harry Potter movies, those would be fun. But then I watched a really tearjerker kind of a drama and felt like I would absolutely want to write music for something like that. I think that in Jason Bourne and Master and Commander have a really great sound world. So it would be really great to compose for a movie where sound effects absolutely brilliant and well done.
Interviewer: Have you had any movie people contact you yet to test the waters, what kind of sound world you would provide?
Olli: Not yet, but when it comes to game scores, a lot of things are happening again so we’ll see what comes out from that.
Interviewer: Now that you started on that, please continue.
Olli: Help! These things can’t be revealed just yet. But we’re been in contact with several different game houses that we’ve worked previously with and they always have something going on and we try to be involved in those things whenever they want us to be.
Interviewer: It seems to have been a very good formula for you guys, so there’s no use to break out from that as long as you keep getting good offers for collaboration. We have 8 outstanding artists today getting up on the stage here at Helsinki Day concert. If you could have your pick of the litter for a summertime lunch company, who would it be?
Marko: Chisu.
Interviewer: Why?
Marko: Well… there would be a lot of things to talk about I’m sure.
Interviewer: Does the rest of the band agree?
Captain: Why not.
Olli: Yes, of course. Feminine beauty is always in high regard. Erin would be a very good choice as well.
Captain: Yeah.
Olli: Actually any one of the performing ladies would be fine.
Interviewer: I don’t know how your cooking skills are…
Marko: I’m just superbly skillful at cooking.
Interviewer: So then I’ll direct the next question for you. If you could have a picnic with Chisu right now here on the lawn, what would you cook for her?
Marko: I think some kind of a melodica hot dog and coq au vin. That will be interesting choice for a picnic up there on the hill with trains passing by.
Interviewer: A terrible roadie job.
Marko: Oh yes, pots and pans and all. I always dig myself into a hole.
Interviewer: This sounds good, hopefully a moment later it will sound even better up there on stage. Poets of the Fall thank you and have a wonderful summer. It’s great to have you here.
